Flanders Scientific in India: Range, Buying Guide, Where to Buy
Flanders Scientific, usually shortened to FSI, builds reference monitors for people who sign off on pictures: colorists, DITs, broadcast engineers and post-production teams. If your job is to judge exposure, grade HDR or run QC where the screen has to be trusted, this is the brand you will keep hearing about. Colo Exim is the official distributor for Flanders Scientific in India, so this guide covers the range, how to pick between lines, and what to check before you order.
What Flanders Scientific is and who uses it
FSI makes displays for HDR mastering, colour grading and precision monitoring. The Colo Exim brand page lists the typical users: filmmakers and cinematographers who need on-set monitoring and HDR preview, DITs working with camera feeds and LUTs, colorists grading in HDR and SDR, post houses doing finishing and client review, and broadcast or live teams in control rooms and OB trucks. The Colo Exim page also notes that FSI is now part of the Atomos family, which matters if your set already runs Atomos recorders. You can read the full brand overview on the Flanders Scientific India page.
What separates a reference monitor from a good consumer panel is control. FSI monitors are built around professional signal paths, SDI connectivity, calibration tools and monitoring aids such as waveform and vectorscope, so the picture you see is one you can defend in front of a client.
The Flanders Scientific product range
The current monitor range splits into three lines. Model names below are the ones listed on the FSI website and the Colo Exim brand page.
XMP series: HDR mastering monitors
The XMP line is the top of the range. FSI describes these as HDR mastering displays with a peak luminance rating of at least 1,000 cd/m2. The models are XMP270, XMP310, XMP550, XMP551 and XMP651, all QD-OLED.
The XMP270 is a 26.5-inch UHD (3840 x 2160) QD-OLED with about 1,000 cd/m2 peak luminance and about 1,500,000:1 contrast. FSI lists four 12G/6G/3G/HD-SDI inputs, clean and processed loop outputs, RS-485, IP and GPI remote control, and 100mm VESA mounting. It also lists a 3-pin XLR DC input, which is useful for production power. The XMP310 steps up to a 31.5-inch UHD panel with similar luminance and contrast figures.
At the large end, the XMP551 (55-inch) and XMP651 (65-inch) use fourth-generation QD-OLED panels. The Colo Exim page gives about 4,000 cd/m2 peak luminance and about 8,000,000:1 contrast for both. Colo Exim lists the XMP270 and XMP551 as Dolby Vision mastering monitors and says the current XMP mastering models qualify.
XMP C series: compact versions
FSI positions the XMP C line as compact, cost-effective monitors for trucks and control rooms. The models are XMP270C, XMP310C and XMP550C. Colo Exim says they use the same QD-OLED panel technology as their full-size counterparts, with reduced size, weight and cost. Neither source gives separate luminance figures for the C models, so ask us for the exact data sheet before you compare them with the full XMP versions.
DM series: HDR preview and production monitoring
The DM line is for HDR preview and HD production or QC work. Models listed are DM160, DM211, DM231 and DM242. The DM160 is an RGB OLED, 1920 x 1080 monitor weighing about 2.6 kg, with two 3G/HD/SD-SDI inputs, one DVI-D, one DisplayPort, a 4-pin XLR DC input and a 6RU rack mount kit included. The DM211 is a 21.5-inch model; Colo Exim lists the DM231 at 23 inches and the DM242 at 24 inches. Colo Exim also describes a Zero Delay Fast Mode on the DM line that cuts signal-to-screen latency to less than one field, and support for HLG and PQ workflows.
Quick comparison
| Line | Models | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| XMP | XMP270, XMP310, XMP550, XMP551, XMP651 | HDR mastering, final grading, Dolby Vision work |
| XMP C | XMP270C, XMP310C, XMP550C | Trucks and control rooms where size and cost matter |
| DM | DM160, DM211, DM231, DM242 | HDR preview, production monitoring, QC |
How to choose the right FSI monitor
Start with what you are signing off on. If a deliverable is graded and mastered in HDR, and the grade is what the client approves, you want an XMP. If you grade in a suite, the 26.5-inch XMP270 or the 31.5-inch XMP310 sit comfortably on a desk. If the grade has to be judged on a big screen with a client in the room, the 55-inch XMP551 or 65-inch XMP651 are the sizes to look at.
If space, weight or budget are tight, such as an OB truck or a small control room, look at the XMP C line before you drop to a lower tier. You keep the QD-OLED panel technology and give up size.
If your work is HDR preview, DIT carts, edit rooms or QC benches, the DM line is the better fit. The DM160 is the one for carts and portable use because of its weight and DC input. The larger DM models make sense on a bench or in a rack.
One practical rule: buy for the job that pays you, not the specification sheet. A colorist who delivers HD television does not need a 65-inch mastering panel. A colorist who delivers Dolby Vision does.
What to check before buying
- Inputs. The FSI site and Colo Exim page both stress SDI connectivity. The XMP270 lists four 12G/6G/3G/HD-SDI inputs; the DM160 lists two 3G/HD/SD-SDI plus DVI-D and DisplayPort. Match this to your camera, switcher or grading hardware output before ordering.
- Power. The XMP270 takes 100-240 VAC with an external supply, or a 3-pin XLR DC input at 24 VDC. The DM160 uses a 4-pin XLR DC input. If you run on battery or a DC bus, confirm the connector.
- Calibration. GaiaColor AutoCal lets supported XMP models be calibrated directly from compatible probes connected to the display, with the profile stored on the monitor, no computer needed. Check your probe is on the compatible list; the DM160 page names the CR100, CR250, CR300, Klein K10A, K80, CA210, CA310, CA410 and i1D3DS OEM.
- Remote control and software. FSI lists RS-485, IP and GPI remote control, plus Pomfort Livegrade and Assimilate Live Assist support on the advanced XMP and XMP C lines.
- Mounting. The XMP270 and DM160 both list 100mm VESA mounting, and the DM160 ships with a 6RU rack kit.
If a spec matters to your purchase and is not on a public page, we will confirm it from the manufacturer rather than guess.
